In 1998, Dhoni was chosen by Deval Sahay to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team.[29] Till 1998 Dhoni, who was in class twelfth in school, had played just school cricket and club cricket and no expert cricket. One of the well known scenes, when Dhoni used to play for CCL, was when Deval Sahay used to blessing him Rs 50 for every six that he hit in Sheesh Mahal competition cricket matches.[30] Playing for CCL, he got an opportunity to bat up the request. He snatched the chance and scored hundreds of years and encouraged CCL move to the A division.[31] Deval Sahay intrigued by his hard-hitting shots and commitment, utilized his contacts in Bihar Cricket Association to push for his choice in the Bihar team.[32] Deval Sahay, an ex Bihar Cricket Association Vice-President, was the Ranchi District Cricket President around then and was instrumental in pushing Dhoni to the large phase of Ranchi group, junior Bihar cricket crew and inevitably senior Bihar Ranji Team for the 1999–2000 season. Inside 1 year, Dhoni moved from playing in CCL to the Bihar Ranji team.[33][34] Dhoni has credited Deval Sahay for ingraining discipline in him.[35] Dhoni was remembered for the Bihar U-19 crew for the 1998–99 season and scored 176 runs in 5 matches (7 innings) as the group completed fourth in the gathering of six and didn't make it to the quarter-finals. Dhoni was not picked for the East Zone U-19 crew (CK Nayudu Trophy) or Rest of India crew (MA Chidambaram Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy). Bihar U-19 cricket crew progressed to the finals of 1999–2000 Cooch Behar Trophy, where Dhoni made 84 to assist Bihar with posting a sum of 357.[36] Bihar's endeavors were overshadowed by Punjab U-19s' 839 with Dhoni's future national crew colleague Yuvraj Singh making 358.[37][38] Dhoni's commitment in the competition included 488 runs (9 matches, 12 innings), 5 fifties, 17 gets and 7 stumpings.[39] Dhoni made it toward the East Zone U-19 crew for the CK Nayudu trophy[40] however scored just 97 runs[41] in four matches, as East Zone lost every one of the four matches and completed rearward in the tournament.[42
